It has to do with Environmental Responsibility.
We are committed to protecting the air, land, and waters of South Carolina.
Using the latest technologies, we planned, operated, and are reclaiming what we effected, and concentrating our efforts on achieving the highest environmental standards possible. Among our concerns were Acid Rock Drainage, Protecting Wildlife, Safely Managing the Industrial Chemicals used in Mining, Effluent Water Quality, Final Reclamation Profile and the Environment. It is sometimes possible to leave a site better than before the our operation was put in.
Even before a mining operation begins, a plan for its reclamation must be drawn up, minimizing impact on an area and preserving the other natural resources is of prime concern. During mining, the site and surrounding area is closely monitored for environmental compliance. Reclamation is an ongoing process, beginning as soon as possible, and concluding only after the last ground has been recontoured and revegetated.
We are committed to the creation of two freshwater lakes at the former site of our two production pits. Reclamation is followed by a period of site monitoring, helping to ensure that the reclamation's plan and implementation were sound.
Most of our employees are from South Carolina, and continue to live here though we have ceased operation. They, as we, have to live with the legacy we have left behind us. It is this legacy that drives our commitment.
