Babbitt,
Minnesota Reclamation Site
|

Completed reclamation at Babbitt, Minnesota.
Long-term care and monitoring activities continued through the first quarter of 2000 at the reclaimed copper-nickel exploration project located near Babbitt, Minnesota. To date, Kennecott has applied best practices to remove and mitigate potential sources of surface and ground water contamination, and fully reclaimed the site in 1995.
Environmental monitoring activities through 2000 have demonstrated no evidence of adverse environmental impacts from exploration activities dating back to the mid-1970s. Based on demonstrating that there have been no environmental impacts at the site, a request was submitted to the Minnesota Department of Environmental Protection in 1999, and approved in May 2000, to terminate the on-site surface and ground water monitoring permit. Kennecott has volunteered to continue sampling one surface water site and one ground water site for dissolved nickel on an annual basis for an additional three years. Approximately $4 million have been spent to properly reclaim and close this site, creating a diverse wildlife habitat.
