Nevada Copper, Nevada Reclamation Site

Cattle grazing on the Nevada Copper reclaimed tailings.

Kennecott Nevada Copper is located in the town of McGill, Nevada, where operations of Nevada Consolidated Copper Company began in 1908. Copper ore from the Robinson Mine near Ruth, Nevada, was transported by rail to McGill for milling, concentrating and smelting.

In 1933, Kennecott Corporation purchased the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company and operated the reduction plants at McGill until 1978, and continued smelting until 1983, when 75 years of copper production came to an end. During 1989-1993, the concentrator and smelter site, along with approximately 4,000 acres of tailings surface, were reclaimed. The Nevada Division of Minerals recognized Kennecott's reclamation efforts in 1995 by awarding the prestigious "Governor's Excellence in Reclamation Award." Since 1998, Kennecott has managed progressive livestock grazing and perimeter reclamation programs associated with the tailings area.

Over the years, Kennecott has donated property for tourism and public uses, including the railroad between Ruth and McGill, a community swimming pool and an indoor archery range, all of which are enjoyed by local residents. The White Pine County Board of Commissioners recognized Kennecott as a "good friend to the county for many years" and has publicly recognized Kennecott for caring about the community.

Kennecott Minerals Company will continue to administer approximately 16,000 acres of ranch land together with the operation and maintenance of a complex water supply and delivery system. Kennecott has invested approximately $20 million to reclaim this site. The agricultural land and reclaimed tailings area are now being used for grazing of cattle by a local rancher and provide habitat for a variety of abundant wildlife.
